The Theriault family transformed a washer into an ice zamboni to make an ice rink in their backyard in Winnipeg.
To make ice, the Theriault family pump water from the river and then take care of embellishing the ice. The family, however, were looking for a way to better smooth the ice.
Ron Theriault owns a small home appliance repair shop in Winnipeg. He used his repair skills to give his washer a second life.
Mr. Theriault strapped skis under the appliance and installed a new plumbing system to throw in water and make the ice smooth.
It works great, and I can remove the plumbing so that it doesn’t freeze
, explains Ron Theriault.
This is a good alternative, because if you had to carry this amount of water, you would be tired.Ron Theriault, ice rink resurfacer

The family even decorated the washer to make it look like the ice resurfacers used at Place Bell MTS .
The ice rink resurfacer carries up to 180 liters of water. The front of the machine is equipped with a blade for removing snow from the ice surface.
A video of the machine was posted on social media Reddit , and users were intrigued by the machine, said Anthony Theriault, son of Ron Theriault.
On the Internet, the family has also received compliments for manual work and creativity, notes Anthony Theriault.
On social media, people were asking, “Is this a refrigerator? Is it a dryer?”
says Anthony Theriault. The family replied: no, it’s a washer
